Connecting to SLC
Description
Learn how to connect to Allen-Bradley SLC (5/05 and 5/04) devices. Because these PLCs do not have a native Ethernet connection, another device like an Net ENI or an ENBT is required for connection.
Video recorded using: Ignition 8.1

(open in window)[00:00] Let's take a look at how we would connect Ignition to an Allen-Bradley SLC device. First, we want to log into the configuration section of the Gateway webpage. Let's scroll down to the OPC UA section and select Device Connections. Next, we'll click on Create New Device. The following page will contain a list of all your installed drivers. Let's select the Allen-Bradley SLC Driver. These PLCs don't have a native ethernet connection, so another device must be used for the connection. For reference, these are the supported SLC connection methods. Let's scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit the next button. Now we can configure a connection. We'll give the connection a name first. Then we can enter a host name, which is the IP address of the SLC processor device. In my case, it's 10.20.4.51 . You'll want to use the IP address of the device you want to connect to. The protocol the SLC processor supports will be detected automatically.
[01:10] It will use either of these protocols. As of Ignition 8.1.8, the Local Address property allows you to specify what local address to connect from when establishing a TCP connection. If this box is left blank, then the driver will simply pick the address of an available network adapter to connect from as needed. For more information on how to connect to a SLC device, supported protocols, and connection paths, please see the link to the Ignition User Manual below this video, or review the documentation for the device. For this demonstration, we'll leave all the other fields at their default settings and hit the Create New Device button at the bottom. It will then browse the device for any tags and connect to it. Once we're connected, we can go take a look at all the tags in the device. We'll scroll down to OPC Client and select OPC Quick Client from the menu options. We can expand these folders, find our SLC device, and explore there to see the associated tags in the device.
