LESSON
Learn how to connect to Allen-Bradley Logix devices using firmware version 21 or higher.
Video recorded using: Ignition 8.3
[00:00] In this lesson, we'll take a look at connecting to a device that's part of the Allen-Bradley Logix family on firmware version 21 or above. To start, I'll go to my Gateway webpage in the connection section, expand devices, and click connections. Then I'll click Create Device Connection. I'll select the Allen-Bradley Logix driver. This driver does support earlier firmware versions at significantly reduced performance, but it's specifically optimized for devices on firmware versions 21 or above. Once that's selected, I'll click next. I'll give my connection a name, I'll just call this Logixv21. Then I'll need to provide the host name or IP address for the controller or ethernet module I'm connecting to. This will also need to know which port to communicate on. I'm leaving mine on the default 44818. I've supplied enough information to create the connection, but I'll call out a couple more properties you may be interested in. The local address field allows me to specify a local address that I want to connect from.
[01:03] I'm just gonna leave it blank, which lets the driver pick an available address. If I were connecting to my device through a ControlLogix gateway, I need to specify a connection path here. I'm connecting directly to the processor so it's not needed, and will instead reference the slot number in the advanced section, which I'm leaving at the default of zero. Connection paths will be unique to your setup, so if you'd like more information on them, see the link to our user manual in the resources section. Below the video also include a link to a reference of all the connection settings for this driver. I'm done with my configuration, so I'll click create device connection. The status should change to connected, so I should be able to open my designer, browse my devices from the tag browser, expand my device connection, and start seeing my tags.
